Champion SST Trap Thrower review:

Received the SST trap on Monday 07/17/2006. I was able to test the SST Tuesday.

I ordered the machine with oscillator and wobble options.
Assembly took a little more time than I would have liked, however it went together fairly easy. Photos in the instruction manual could have been much clearer. There are three adjustments to make (target retainer and limit switch.) In-addition, we left the main spring tension adjustment on the weak side.

Upon arriving to our favorite target shooting destination, Jim Canterbury and I set the SST on the hitch receiver T, I made, (see photos) then simply clamped the wood trap base to it. We had taken all assembly tools with us plus more, assuming we would be making field adjustments to zero this trap thrower in.

Jim and I were extremely pleased; we did our first test throw (2) and started shooting immediately.  Wow, what a hoot. We threw about 200 clays, with the machine only prematurely breaking seemingly less that five percent.
We had the main spring adjustment on the weak side, so the clays went about forty yards. We will tighten up the main spring next time; to see how shooting seventy yards will be.

Jim and I have never had so much fun trap shooting. Ok, it was more like two middle age guys having more fun than a child with his first bicycle! :)
If the State of California found this kind of fun existed, they would figure a way to tax-it! Ok, that was the end of sharing my cynical side!

I belong to the Cottage Grove Gun Club. As much as I love the people and how well the club manages the grounds, that kind of clay target shooting is just a bit slow, after shooting with the Champion SST Trap Thrower. I went from shooting a high of 90 percent clay kills at the gun clubs, down to 60 percent with my personal SST. The decrease in percentage clay kills with the SST is obviously directly related to the increased challenge…speed and duration of the clays being released and presented.

There are so many variations and configurations you can set with this machine. We started out (Jim and I) calling for single throws with the oscillator and wobble switches turned off. The latter soon (after five throws) turned toward the boring side. We now shoot with the wobbler and oscillator on at all times. It makes it much more difficult and resembles actual hunting conditions, except this is much more challenging as you can call for the targets in as little as one second intervals. Shooting quads makes shooting doubles at the local trap club seem boring.

The 100 foot corded foot release seemed to be very fast acting, and you can hold the pedal down for non-stop continuous throws, up to seventy if you have the optional clay retainer housing. At this juncture I will be ordering the voice actuated release option. I tried to shoot and actuate the corded release from the foot pedal; the latter isn't a real viable option as it tends to make the shooter unstable.

I'm so impressed with the type of shooting experience the Champion SST trap thrower presents; I'm now offering the machine as a rental, for private and corporate clientele.

This electric trap thrower purchase decision was a difficult one, due in-large part, because of the inadequate manufacturer product descriptions, photos and disclosures on their web sites. If you would like to talk about your purchase or the SST feel free to phone me at: 888-706-5508. In-addition, I would love to here how others organize your shooters with your personal trap machine configurations!

I purchased a gell cell battery for $190.00 specifically for the Champion, after two solid hours of operation; the machine only used five percent of the battery capacity.
